Raspberry Banana Avocado Smoothie

First of all, I promise you can’t taste the avocado! It magically just blends in with the other fruit.

I got the idea of adding avocados to my smoothies from The Baltic Maid. Thanks Baltic Maid, for making it easier to eat green things! I tried the whole spinach smoothie thing, but it wasn’t for me. Fresh spinach is difficult to find here so I used frozen spinach and… no. Does anyone have a way of making spinach edible? Please share if you do!

This isn’t much of a recipe. Just throw stuff in the food processor / blender and that’s it. Add more fruit, less fruit, different fruit, it doesn’t matter. :)

I also dislike plain yogurt so these are nice. Three servings of fruit (I wish avocados counted as vegetables!) and yogurt.

Just ignore that sunken raspberry in the back. And the fact that I had to use soggy frozen raspberries because the fresh raspberries I found at the store today were moldy, which happens to be a normal occurrence around here (okay, yeah, I could have gone to one of the expensive stores to get them but I was being lazy).

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup frozen raspberries (about 130 grams)
  • 1/2 – 1 avocado (mine was a Hass but you can use any type; mine weighed 130 grams)
  • 1 frozen banana, optional*
  • 1 cup (250 grams) plain yogurt
  • honey / Stevia / sugar / whatever sweetener you like
  • milk, optional
* Peel and cut the bananas into chunks (5-6 or even small pieces if you’re in a hurry), place in a baggie and then freeze for an hour first.

Directions:

I like my smoothies really thick so I use all yogurt but if you like, you could do half yogurt, half milk. Blend all ingredients, starting with only 1/2 an avocado, in your blender or food processor. My blender can’t handle recipes without lots of liquid, so I have to do this one in the food processor. Taste it and if you want the other half avocado, go ahead and add it in and blend some more. Add sweetener to taste. I add about 1 tablespoon of honey. Yields one large serving or two smaller ones.

I used vanilla greek yogurt and mixed frozen berries
because that's what I had on hand. Taste is good but way too thick. I added almond milk.

Delicious. I followed your recipe but also threw in a tablespoon of chia seeds and used vanilla yogurt because that's what I had in th fridge. Yum! I was looking for an avocado smoothie recipe because I knew it would make it creamy. Mine was definitely more of a guacamole color, but yummy nonetheless.

You used raspberries, though? How strange that it came out green. I make all kinds of avocado smoothies and they never come out weirdly colored. I'm happy you enjoyed the smoothie and I like your additions! Thanks for the feedback. :)

Rowena – I'm happy I found yours too! And I don't know what's up with the mold. Berries here are never in the refrigerated section, but they are in the US. Maybe that's what it is. And thank you for stopping by to say hi. :)

I like smoothies but I don't like cow's milk so I always substitute mine with almond milk. Fresh berries here in Italy get moldy very fast. It's pretty normal to see them. I just finished whipping up a drink with raspberries myself. I was afraid of the molds too. Nice to have found your blog Erin! Thanks for stopping by mine.

Sonia – Haha. I'm actually drinking another one right now (this time with orange juice!) and they always come out prettily pink. Never green. Maybe it's the raspberries! I hope you enjoy it. :)

OK, how did you get your smoothie to be so pretty and pink after adding avocado to it? Are the avocados there pink, by any chance?

This looks really good, Erin. I know what I'm having for brekkie tomorrow!

Jose – You have a point but frozen spinach is just terrible! I don't mind frozen fruit, though. Or frozen anything really. Just not frozen spinach. :)

A lot of times, frozen fruits taste better and are better for you because they are picked at the right time and processed right away. As opposed to the produce that makes it to conventional supermarkets. Now, truly fresh is another ball of wax altogether..

Baking Serendipity – I hope you like it! It makes them nice and creamy. And thanks for your spinach advice! I might try it if I build up the courage. Cream cheese, mozzarella and parmesan are so perfect already… and then spinach? I don't know. Maybe I'll add a tiny bit to a tiny section the next time I make lasagna and see if I can taste it. :)

Avocado in a smoothie is such a great idea! I love adding spinach to my smoothies, but will definitely change up my regular routine with avocado this week :) PS: One of my favorite simple meals is combining frozen spinach with cream cheese, mozzarella cheese and parmesan cheese. I use it as the filling for chicken roll-ups and serve it topped with spaghetti sauce. Maybe it will get you to love spinach? :)

Cassie and Catalina – Thank you! :)

Katie – Thanks! You can really throw an avocado in any fruit smoothie and you can't taste it. It's a great way to get a serving of avocado for avocado haters. :)

Baltic Maid – Thanks! I hope you like the raspberry version. :)

Heidi – Wow! Hi! :) I'm honored that you took the time to leave a comment given your probable time constraint. I thought that fresh spinach was super common in North America. Not that I ever tried buying it. And thanks… I like the color too. :)

    Katrina – Thanks!

London Bakes – Thank you! It's nice how the green just disappears, isn't it? :)

Amanda – Finally I'm not alone! It seems like strawberries are in season everywhere else and I've been so jealous. The original recipe uses fresh strawberries so I'm sure it'd be fantastic. I hope you like it!

Miryam – Me too! I wouldn't be able to use fresh berries in a smoothie. I like to eat them plain! Fresh strawberries would be okay, but other berries are so expensive I'd never put them in a smoothie. I hope you enjoyed your smoothie. :)

Wow. I am pretty sure frozen spinach would taste really awful in a smoothy, not the same at all as fresh spinach because with fresh spinach you couldn't even know the difference at all!!

I have just actually made an organic mixed berry and banana smoothie myself. I always have tons of organic frozen berries in the freezer which makes the job lots, lots easier :-)

Your smoothie looks really creamy and yummy……

Yum! Some of my favorite things all blended together. When strawberry season finally arrives around here I might try this with some fresh ones. Frozen fruit is perfect for smoothies though. Frozen spinach on the other hand- not so nice!

Looks delicious! I love how pretty pink it is :D And avocado in smoothies is so awesome – it gets so creamy. Mmmm.
I know what you mean about spinach – the frozen stuff is nasty! I have no tricks to make it taste any better, I just buy fresh when I can which means I don't get it all the time :( Too bad because the fresh stuff is awesome in smoothies(meaning, you can't taste it, haha)
