French Hot Chocolate

This French hot chocolate is thick, rich, and deeply chocolaty β€” with a touch of vanilla and a hint of salt. It’s easy to make traditionally β€” or vegan and paleo.

Ingredients

For the hot chocolate:

  • 1 cup (236 ml) whole milk or cashew milk for vegan/paleo
  • 1/3 cup (78 ml) heavy cream or coconut cream for vegan/paleo
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract optional
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 cup (170 grams) semi-sweet chocolate somewhat finely chopped, use vegan/paleo alternatives if needed

For the topping:

  • whipped cream + chocolate shavings coconut cream for paleo/vegan

Instructions

  • In a small pot over medium heat, heat the milk, cream, vanilla extract and salt until very hot and steamy. When you see bubbles, turn the heat to low and stir in the chocolate, stirring occasionally, until melted.

  • Top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

  • Serve immediately. This is very rich, so you'll probably want to serve it in rather small cups.
  • If you have leftovers, you can cool, cover and refrigerate for up to 2 days.
