Is sesame oil vegan? Yes, it is! No animal products are used in the production.
For added peace of mind, keep a lookout for the Vegan Action certification on the packaging. They have a database of over 10,000 vegan-friendly products, so it might be a good idea to have a look at which brands of sesame oil are on that list.
I searched for sesame oil (here and only found one brand, Foods Alive, that is certified vegan.
What is sesame oil?
Sesame oil just contains the oil of sesame seeds. There are two types of sesame oil – toasted, which is the darker kind, and light sesame oil.
Sesame oil is usually used for seasoning rather than cooking, and a little can go a long way to adding flavor.
The lighter version has the fresh taste of sesame seeds and is made with untoasted seeds. It can be used as a flavoring, although the flavor is mild. It’s also more suitable for cooking than dark sesame oil.
Dark sesame oil is pressed from toasted sesame seeds, which results in a nuttier flavor. It’s also the kind used more often in Asian cooking.
