Eggnog White Russian (super flavorful, easy!)

This eggnog White Russian simply uses eggnog in place of the cream in this classic drink for a fun Christmas twist. You only need eggnog, vodka and Kahlua, and it takes but a minute to make.

What is a White Russian?

This is a cocktail made with vodka, Kahlua (or another coffee liqueur) and cream. It’s served with ice in an old-fashioned glass and was invented in the 1960s.

It’s a twist on the Black Russian, which consists of just vodka and coffee liqueur. Once you add the cream, it becomes a White Russian.

These drinks don’t originate from Russia but supposedly get their names from the fact that vodka is the primary ingredient.

Eggnog twist

So in today’s recipe, we’re using eggnog instead of cream. If you’re not into the eggnog twist, check out this classic White Russian. So it’s just:

  • Eggnog
  • Vodka
  • Kahlua

With some nutmeg as garnish.

It takes a minute to make, and it tastes great! But definitely don’t skip the nutmeg on top.

It really makes a difference. It makes it clear that this is indeed an eggnog White Russian.

How to make it

You’ve got two options: shaken or layered.

To make a shaken eggnog White Russian:

Get out your cocktail shaker. If you don’t have one, use any jar or bottle that has a tight lid.

Fill the shaker 3/4 full with ice. Then add your three ingredients.

Shake for about 30 seconds. Fill a lowball glass with ice and strain the cocktail into the glass.

Garnish with nutmeg.

To make a layered drink:

Fill a lowball glass with ice. Then add the coffee liqueur.

Top with vodka and then the eggnog.

Stir and garnish with nutmeg.

Eierlikör or Advocaat instead of eggnog

Eierlikör, also known as Advocaat, is a rich, creamy liqueur with a custard-like flavor. In Germany, it’s most often consumed during Easter and Christmas, but available year-round.

The name advocaat is supposedly derived from “Abacate”, a drink that European explorers discovered from the indigenous people of the Amazon rainforest in the 17th century.

I am not at all an eggnog fan. But I do love Eierlikör! Here’s my recipe for homemade Eierlikör if you don’t have it available where you live.

And it’s great in this eggnog White Russian!

Store-bought or homemade eggnog

Use whatever you like! Homemade or store-bought. Alcoholic or non-alcoholic.

I’ve posted two homemade eggnogs this week. First was the Paleo Eggnog.

It’s cashew and date-based. If you’ve never made any cashew-based treats, I can see why you’d be hesitant.

It definitely doesn’t sound tasty. But it is so thick, flavorful and in my opinion, WAY better than regular eggnog.

Then I posted this Vegan Eggnog, which is the same as the paleo eggnog, but with a few changes, including added rum.

I’ve made this White Russian with both of those recipes. You still get a nice alcoholic taste when using paleo (non-alcoholic) eggnog. When you use the vegan (alcoholic) eggnog, the alcohol taste isn’t overpowering – it’s just stronger.

Vodka + coffee liqueur quality

When it comes to vodka, I can’t even tell you what brand I use. I don’t use the absolute cheapest (maybe close to it, though!) and certainly don’t bother with anything expensive.

For the coffee liqueur, I do use Kahlua. I’ve tried cheap brands and they’re just not as good.

Tia Maria is another well-known brand, and I’m sure it’d be great in here.

Want to try a different twist? Check out this Baileys White Russian!

Can I use a flavored vodka?

Yes, I think Smirnoff Whipped Cream or a vanilla flavored vodka would be great.

As for other flavors, I don’t know. I only use the regular plain vodka.

Is this gluten-free?

First, you need to check your eggnog. It’s naturally gluten-free, but who knows what kind of additives can be found in some store-bought eggnog.

Concerning Kahlua, this is what they have listed on their website:

The processes of distillation should eliminate cereal proteins from distilled spirits drinks, and therefore distilled drinks are generally accepted for a gluten-free diet.

We do not add any known gluten ingredients in Kahlúa Original or the Kahlúa Flavors. Please note, however, that we cannot offer specific advice, and recommend that you discuss these matters with your medical or dietetic advisors.

And vodka? Pure, distilled vodka, even if it’s made with gluten grains like wheat, barley, or rye, is considered gluten-free. So you’re good to go!

It’s just flavored vodka you need to watch out for. There can definitely be gluten in those.

Vegan option

You need to use vegan eggnog. You can use my homemade recipe for vegan eggnog or use store-bought.

Here are some easy-to-find brands.

  • So Delicious Coconut Milk Nog
  • Silk Nog
  • Califia Almondmilk Nog
  • Almond Breeze Almondmilk Nog
  • Aldi Almond Nog

I’ve read that the ones from So Delicious and Silk are the tastiest, but in this mixed drink, I don’t think it’ll make a massive difference.

And the next change is to use 3 tablespoons espresso (or really strong coffee) + 1 tablespoon more rum in place of the coffee liqueur. I go into how to make espresso at length in my Espresso Martini with Baileys post, so be sure to check that out if you need directions.

You could also use 1.5 teaspoons of instant coffee in 3 tablespoons water + 1 tablespoon rum to replace the Kahlua.

That’s it! I hope you’ll enjoy this eggnog White Russian. If you make any of my recipes, I’d love to see 📸 pictures of your creations on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter! Please hashtag them #texanerin so I can find them.

Such an easy twist to turn an old favourite into a swoon-worthy Christmas cocktail! Especially love your idea of making it with Eierlikör, I remember that from my travels in Germany and I just love the flavor and texture.

I made this eggnog white Russian as a predinner drink for hubby and I on New Year’s Eve (yesterday) I used advocaat instead of eggnog and it was just so good! The only problem was limiting ourselve to just 2 each!
