Healthy Chocolate Raspberry Pudding (paleo, vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free)

This thick and creamy healthy chocolate raspberry pudding is guilt-free and sweetened with fruit! Naturally gluten-free with paleo, vegan and dairy-free options.

Yup. It’s actually healthy.

There’s no added sugar at all. Just fruit. There’s about half an avocado, 3/4 cup raspberries and some dates. I normally use bananas in these type of things but I didn’t want the taste to overpower the raspberries, so I went with dates.

Thanks to the avocado, you’ve got your healthy fats. And the raspberries provide you with a nice amount of fiber. I didn’t strain the raspberries because I don’t mind the seeds, but if you’ve got picky kids, you may want to do that prior to adding the raspberries to the avocado / date mixture.

There’s a small optional amount of Greek yogurt, regular yogurt, or whatever dairy-free milk you have on hand. It’s good either way, but I preferred it with Greek yogurt.

I have to be honest. This doesn’t taste totally like normal pudding (in case that’s not obvious by the ingredients ;)) First you’ve got the raspberry seeds and on top of that, it’s not nearly as sweet. But it is incredibly creamy and will definitely satisfy any chocolate or dessert craving you may have!

Thick and Creamy Healthy Chocolate Raspberry Pudding – sweetened with fruit and naturally gluten-free, vegan and dairy-free! With a vegan / paleo option.

It was plenty sweet for Mr. T and I, but you can always add in a little sugar. I tossed in a little coconut sugar to the pudding once, just to see if it’d dissolve or taste funky due to the taste of the coconut sugar, but all was well.

I first posted this chocolate raspberry pudding in February 2012 but I thought it needed a makeover so here it is again! If you’ve had my chocolate avocado smoothie – this recipe is very similar. You can’t taste the avocado (another thing that I don’t like!) and chocolate is the predominant flavor. You can definitely taste the raspberries, and it’s more than subtle, but it’s mostly chocolate.

And um, apparently it’s chocolate raspberry recipe week on the blog. It was unintended but I hope y’all don’t mind. :)

Healthy Chocolate Raspberry Pudding (paleo, vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free)

Healthy Chocolate Raspberry Pudding (paleo, vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free)
  • Prep Time:
  • Cook Time:
  • Ready in:
  • Yield: 1 large or 2 smallish/medium servings

Ingredients

  • 6 dates (40 grams - if you use Medjool dates, go by weight)
  • 85 grams cold avocado flesh (~1/2 avocado)
  • 3/4 cup (94 grams) frozen or fresh raspberries
  • 2 tablespoons Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt, regular yogurt, or dairy-free / vegan / paleo milk of choice - optional

Directions

  1. Blend the dates and avocado together with an immersion blender or a small food processor until it's very creamy. You can also use a blender if you have a very good one like a Blendtec (my regular blender requires too much liquid for a pudding like this).
  2. Add the frozen raspberries, cocoa powder and vanilla and process until well combined.
  3. Add the yogurt or milk, if desired.
  4. Serve immediately. If you use fresh raspberries, you'll probably want to refrigerate for 1-2 hours before serving.

Another winner Erin! I used frozen mixed berries that have been sitting in my freezer for too long — I finally know what to do with them now! I also added two eggs instead of yogurt. It was surprisingly good. Thank you!!

This is one fantastic looking pudding! I have such a pudding weakness and when I make it from scratch I almost always just end up eating it warm from the pot. I love the addition on raspberry in here too…yum!

    Erin,

I just made this and am struggling not to eat both of them right now! Super afternoon treat and great use for 1/2 an avocado.

Speaking of, how can you be from Texas and not like avocados? I thought they are our state fruit and state vegetable.

    Thanks for the lovely recipe,
    Carla

p.s. I know that you are still working on your current cookbook but if you need an idea for the 2nd I would love to see one with desserts for 2. You are one of the few sites I visit that offers any and I almost make those right away. Just a suggestion. ; p

Nice to hear from you, Carla! I’m so, so happy you made and enjoyed the pudding! And about avocados – I just don’t like anything green. It’s awful. I’m finished with the first (and last book I ever think I’ll write ;)) but I do like your idea! I think I’ll make some more small batch desserts because I like them too. Thanks for your comment!

And what’s not to like about the chocolate-raspberry combo???? It’s one of my favorites. This pudding sounds like it would definitely be worth making. My poor avocado-disliking husband is suddenly being hit with foods made with avocado… He survived the last one so it should be safe to try this. :-)

Honestly I'm still a little burned out on sweets because of the holidays but I'm slowly making my way through some recipes. I've invited my family over for supper on Sunday and I'm making this for dessert. I know they're going to be shocked as to how unbelievable this is. My husband was. I hope you post your Nutella fudge. Now that I'm getting more adventurous I'll make that too!

Sorry for my slow reply! I was really sick up until today. The avocado fudge I made is still in the fridge and hasn't been touched or photographed. I hope I'll feel well enough to get around to that soon so that I can make a post about it. I hope your family liked the pudding! :) And I like that you're getting more adventurous. I'm the same way, but with only very few things. Like with avocados. :)

I admit I was skeptical about putting avocado into a dessert (quite skeptical actually), but the picture looks great and I love your recipes so I decided to try it and I'm soooo glad that I did. It's phenomenal! Honestly the best pudding I've ever tried. I'm shocked at how delicious it is! Who knew avocado could taste this good? I like it thick too so I made it without milk, used 2 cups of raspberries and 1/2 cup of sugar. Heavenly, and I haven't even put it in the fridge yet. I will definitely be making this for Valentine's Day:) Thank you!

Hey, it's Heather R! I've missed your comments. :) I'm so happy that you tried this out despite the weird addition of avocado! And guess what I just made today? Nutella fudge (no sugar other than what's in the Nutella) with… avocado! It's crazy but it somehow worked. Thanks for your feedback, as always. :) It made my day when I saw that I got a comment from you! And the best pudding ever? That's really generous of you. I have to admit that I prefer the sugar and butter filled kind. Especially butterscotch. :D

You never know. I actually found a really healthy recipe the other day, with all kinds of weird healthy things, and one of the ingredients was some kind of chocolate powder, so I thought maybe that's what you had used. But good to know that I don't need to go buy that funky powder to make your version. :)

The pudding really looks luxurious and the consistency seems just right. I think making it with raspberries will be better than bananas eventhough increasing the sugar content may be need it :-)
