These Nutella swirl banana muffins are 100% whole grain, dairy-free and made healthier with better for you ingredients!
My very first post was 100% whole grain banana bread and it’s one of maybe four or five baked goods that Mr. Texanerin really loves. The first few months of blogging, he’d check it every now and then to see if anyone had commented. But nobody did and it was always the least viewed recipe. For some reason I’m not really sure I understand, this made him very sad.
So I made him these banana muffins a while back as a, “Hey! We know the truth. Don’t be sad about your banana bread. At least we know it’s a star.” He’s one of those eat-Nutella-from-the-jar types and I thought he’d really enjoy these. But noooo. I “ruined” his banana bread and “wasted” his Nutella. He’s crazy. These are way better than boring banana bread. ;)
The second time I made these I made my Nutella muffins with homemade chocolate hazelnut spread, but the chocolate taste wasn’t strong enough. They were much better with real Nutella but then that’s not so surprising, is it? They were still good, just not as good!
These are nice and moist and don’t taste healthier. They’re just as good as muffins made with white flour! And like I said, these are way better than plain banana bread. :)
And as a bonus, these banana muffins are dairy-free if you use homemade Nutella. Feel free to use whole spelt instead of whole wheat flour! They come out wonderfully with either type of flour. And if Nutella isn’t your thing, use peanut butter. I haven’t tried it but I imagine the commercial stuff (Jif, Skippy, etc.) would taste better than the natural king that’s just peanuts. Peanut butter and bananas – it’s one of my favorite combinations ever!

100% Whole Grain Nutella Swirl Banana Muffins
- Prep Time:
- Cook Time:
- Ready in:
- Yield: 12 muffins
- 1 1/2 cups (180 grams) whole spelt, whole wheat pastry, or whole wheat flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/3 cup (66 grams) unrefined sugar, or normal brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup (80 grams) honey
- 3 tablespoons canola oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 4 medium super ripe bananas, mashed
- 1/3 – 1/2 cup (85 – 128 grams) Nutella (for the dairy-free version: homemade chocolate hazelnut spread)
- Line 12 muffin tins with liners and preheat your oven to 350°F / 175°C.
- In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and sugar.
- In another medium-sized bowl, lightly beat the eggs.
- Add honey, canola oil, vanilla and mashed bananas.
- Add the wet mix to the dry mix, but just until combined.
- Spoon about 1/4 cup of the batter into each liner. Then drop about 1 tablespoon of Nutella over the batter. Then fill the liners with the remaining batter.
- Add another spoonful of Nutella to the top and swirl around with knife. If the Nutella is giving you trouble, you can put some in a bowl and microwave it for a few seconds until it’s a little melted.
- Bake for about 18 – 22 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Hi, ME AGAIN haha. i am keen to make these but i was wondering if there was a gluten free alternative i could use in place of the flower? Thank you!!
Hi there! I’ve tried making these GF but haven’t been successful yet. :( They’ve been okay, but not great. Sorry about that!
OMG!! I m so happy that I found your website!! I ll start promoting it!!
Can we use coconut sugar instead?
Thank you! I loved your carrot cake! These muffins will be baked soon!!!
I’m happy you found it, too! :) I’m sure coconut sugar would work fine here. I hope you’ll enjoy the muffins! Thanks a bunch for your nice comments today. :)
I have to admit I was little weirded out by the zucchini at first, but O M G they are AMAZING! You cant even taste the zucchini!
I will definitely be making more bathes of these
There’s no zucchini in these! ;) Did you maybe make my zucchini brownies? I’m happy you enjoyed whatever it is that you made!
Oh my goodness! These are addictive! I wonder how they’d be with natural peanut butter and Nutella? As soon as I have more over ripe banannas I’m going to find out. ;)
I’m sorry for the slow reply! I bet these would be amazing with peanut butter and Nutella. :) Let me know how it comes out and thanks so much for the feedback!
Great recipe…came out terrific! Thanks
So happy that you liked the muffins! Thanks for the feedback. :)
Forgot to rate this!
Thanks for that! :)
Made these last night as I had 4 really ripe bananas I didn’t want to toss! My husband, coworker and I loved them! I am an avid Trader Joes shopper and used their Cocoa Almond spread in place of Nutella and it was delish :) Thank you for the wonderful recipe. I will be making these again and more than likely adding ground flax seed and some type of nut. Cheers!
I’m so happy that the almond spread worked in place of the Nutella! And I’m happy that they came out well and that you all enjoyed them. :) I like your nut and flaxseed suggestion. Sounds nice! Thanks so much for the feedback. :)
I've been adding chocolate chips to my banana bread for years. Makes it disappear! And I use whole wheat flour, wheat germ and flax seeds to get some extra good stuff into the kids…as long as there are chocolate chips, they don't suspect it being healthy!
If my banana bread doesn't have chocolate chips in it, then it doesn't disappear as quickly! And I use whole wheat flour, wheat germ and flax seeds to get up the nutritional value, too.
These are fantastic! I had a lot of trouble with the swirling, so I ended up with delicious Nutella GLOBS in each muffin, and everyone who had one went a little crazy with joy. Awesome recipe. I blogged it too.
OOPS wrong link. Blog entry is here.
Globs are good, too! :) I'm so happy that you liked the muffins and thanks for letting me know! I LOVE feedback. :) Off to check out your post.
Nora – Thank you! Do you have a gluten-free banana bread recipe that doesn't use a mix? Although it's kind of pointless for me. I don't even eat banana bread and the banana bread eater around here can not tolerate change to banana bread. Booooo! He's boring.
OH YUM! Nutella + Banana in a muffin with a delicious swirl in the middle – YES PLEASE!!! I must try this combo, sounds and looks incredibly yummy! Love the shot of the swirl…perfection!
Amy – Thanks! And I think Nutella makes almost everything better. I hope you're able to try them out. :)
these look fantastic! i've made nutella swirl poundcake, but never muffins – i'll have to give these a try!
Anon – That's okay! We all have our preferences. I never thought about adding dried berries to banana bread but then again, I'm against add-ins. Except chocolate. Chocolate is always good!
purabi naha – Thanks and welcome! Let me know how you like the recipes. I hope you enjoy them. :)
Amanda – Wow, thank you! I really appreciate it. :) I'm honored that you'd even think of me. Really, thanks a lot!
Miryam – Pound cake without butter? Hmm. That's something I want to see! Do it do it! I'll definitely make it if you post it.
Heidi – I want to try the banana bread recipe you posted recently! Much healthier than this one and I'm sure it'd go well with Nutella too. I went and looked at your first post and you win at best-first-post-pictures. They're so much better than everyone else's. Really. And definitely better than my single sad picture.
Cassie – Thanks! And with these, you really can't tell they're whole grain. There's enough sugar and cinnamon to hide the whole grain flavor to fool most people. :)
These are absolutely lovely. I love sneaking in whole grains to treats like muffins. The Nutella swirl looks so good!
I love the idea of nutella in banana bread. I even have bananas waiting to be used on the counter – I need to do something like this :D
Funny side note – my first post ever was a whole grain banana bread too!! LOL! Awesome!
These look superb!! I have been wanting to make nutella pound cake without the pound of butter :-) Really like the nutella filling in the muffins. I am sure they are super nutella infused :-)
Beautiful! I love how pretty the swirl is in the middle of the muffin. Wanted to let you know that I just nominated you for a Liebster Blog Award. Maybe you already have one, but I love your blog so much that I couldn't leave you out :)
You had me at Nutella swirl! Yum!
I love you blog! Discovered it 2 days ago and I’ve been bookmarking recipes I want to try…. I have about 10 so far! http://cosmopolitancurrymania.blogspot.com
sorry but i tend to agree w/ your husband and like the "plain" banana version better myself. though i would likely add some dried cranberries or those blueberries you have so many of …..
